Refugee and Immigrant Advisory Committee

The Refugee and Immigrant Advisory Council (RIAC) is a charitable organisation that has been assisting newcomers to Canada and St. John’s since 1983. RIAC does not try to integrate newcomers, but rather give them the tools they need to participate in the community to the best of their abilities.

RIAC also provides information to the general public about the challenges many newcomers face, in order to make the capital city a more welcoming place that is better-equipped to interact with people from diverse origins and circumstances.

The Refugee and Immigrant Advisory Committee (RIAC) based in St. John’s, NL, facilitates participation of refugees and immigrants in the communities in which they have chosen to live. RIAC does this by providing a variety of services that members and the community at large can avail of, including:

  • awareness and diversity: RIAC offers a variety of outreach and awareness programs, events, and community activities, including events hosted through the Coalition for Richer Diversity (CORD) on a variety of topics, from employment to mental health and others,
  • English as a Second Language (ESL: RIAC) offers informal English ESL classes, as well as a more informal Conversation Partner program, where newcomers to our province are paired with local conversation partners to strengthen ESL skills while building stronger social connections. This service is provided free of charge and is available to anyone requesting it, and no prerequisites or registration are requested,
  • Volunteer and Internship: RIAC enhances its own operations through a dedicated team of staff and volunteers who undertake training programs so they are constantly learning and growing in their quest to find the best possible ways to deliver services and programming to our members and the community at large. As part of this program, RIAC sponsors volunteer and internship positions.
