SWIS

The Settlement Workers in the Schools (SWIS) Program assists refugee and immigrant students and their families’ transition into a new culture and school environment. This is accomplished by providing school orientation and registration assistance; interpretation services in order to increase effective communication; ongoing educational and advocacy support; and special programming to enhance children and youths’ language learning, cultural awareness, community engagement, and physical activity. Meeting the unique needs of young immigrants is fundamental to their healthy growth and development, and impacts their family's successful integration into the community. This is program is offered in various elementary, junior high and high schools in the Newfoundland and Labrador English and French School Districts as necessary.

We encourage school administrations, teachers, and support workers to contact us if you have any questions on how to better assist newcomers in your school.

We encourage newcomer families to contact us so we can assist in you and your children in the school transition. Our program supports any permanent resident living in Newfoundland and Labrador.
