On Wednesday, December 10, representatives from the Newfoundland and Labrador Human Rights Commission delivered a presentation on human rights to CLB Level 4, 5, and 6 classes in recognition of Human Rights Day. The presentation was followed by a question and answer session. In preparation for the event, students from all classes at the ESL Training Centre (Foundation A to Level 6) wrote a one-sentence definition of what human rights means to them. The definitions, written on brightly-coloured slips of paper, were used to make a colourful 'wall of human rights' display...

On Friday, December 5, the Association for New Canadians, with support from the Department of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, hosted a Newcomer Youth Leadership and Careers in the Applied Sciences conference. The event provided over 30 newcomer youth with an opportunity to participate in a variety of interactive workshops, including demonstrations by Suncor, College of the North Atlantic, Academy Canada, as well as a number of faculties from Memorial University. All youth in attendance were given complimentary lab coats and goggles to take home and, at the end of the day, participated in a bridge building contest for some great prizes! The Rotaract Club of St. John's will be hosting a Coffee House fundraiser on Thursday, November 27th from 6:00-9:30 at Coffee & Company located at 204 Water Street. Funds raised will be used to support the Annual ANC Children's Christmas Party

The Association for New Canadians' Women's Group hosted a Community Kitchen event with the assistance of volunteers from Memorial University's School of Medicine. Participants made hamburgers, meatless burgers, and had the opportunity to speak with volunteers about their experiences with food and cooking in their countries of origin, as well as since their arrival in Canada. The VOCM Coats for Kids Campaign visited the Association for New Canadians' ESL Training Centre on Tuesday, November 18, 2014. Thanks to very generous donations from community members, local business, and schools, clients at the ANC had the opportunity to outfit their children with appropriate clothing for the winter season. On Monday, November 3rd, 2014, 18 women participated in the monthly ANC Women's Group Session. This session included a tour of the historic Government House, where participants learned about the property and its history. Afterwards was a tour of the Basilica Church in downtown St. John's. The Association for New Canadian’s Newcomer Conversation Class took things outside the classroom on Wednesday, October 22. Participants took part in a Sobey’s Taste & Learn Class to talk about nutrition, cooking, and to sample various items including homemade granola, pumpkin and apple soup, and apple butter.
