The Association for New Canadians invites you to participate in a one day forum:
Newcomers to Canada - Trauma and Integration: Guidance for Professionals
This event will provide front-line service workers, community organizations and other individuals with practical skills and guidance to support refugees who have experienced trauma and/or are living with mental health issues. Through sessions and presentations on Cultural Competence, Working with Interpreters, and Trauma Informed Care, participants will gain a better understanding of the refugee experience in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Guest speakers at the event will include:
Dr. Pauline Duke, a family physician, professor at Memorial University's Faculty of Medicine and co-founder of Gateway, an ANC/MUN Medicine partnership linking refugees with family physicians in St. John's
Jim Oldford, MSW, RSW, a clinical social worker at the Janeway Family Centre and participant in Harvard University's Global Mental Health: Trauma and Recovery Certificate Program...

Students and staff at the Association for New Canadians' ESL Training Centre are celebrating Newfoundland and Labrador Multiculturalism Week 2015 by making use of all the snow on the ground! The morning of Wednesday, March 18th was spent building snow sculptures representative of students' countries of origin and/or cultural backgrounds. On Thursday, March 19th, the ANC hosted a Multicultural Festival that included a potluck of traditional foods, a display of written prose by newcomers to Canada, as well as a number of musical and dance performances. A wonderful time was had by all in attendance! Thank you to the Office of Immigration and Multiculturalism for providing support for these events! Students and staff at the Association for New Canadians' ESL Training Centre celebrated St. Patrick's Day on Tuesday, March 17, 2015. In celebration of Chinese New Year the ANC Women’s Group held a Chinese New Year Party on February 19th which included crafts, food, and performances. The Cooking Together pilot program is a partnership between Bridges to Hope, MUN MED Gateway, and the Association for New Canadians. The sessions allow newcomers and MUN medical student volunteers to share cooking skills, recipes, and learn with the guidance of a chef and kitchen coordinator at Bridges to Hope. The Cooking Together pilot concludes with a grocery store and community room session, giving participants the opportunity to get involved with the preparation for the sessions and connect with community resources. At the end of each session the participants and volunteers share the meal that they prepared together, which includes traditional dishes from Newfoundland and around the world. The medical students and newcomer participants are able to learn from each other through socialization and communication throughout the sessions, providing a valuable learning experience for all involved...

LINC Home Study Program
This distance ESL program is offered to LINC-eligible newcomers who wish to improve their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English. This self-paced course of study follows the Canadian Language Benchmarks outcomes, and is offered via correspondence or online. All participants are provided with a weekly half-hour session with a TESL-certified instructor. The Association for New Canadians' Women's Group hosted a Christmas Party on December 17, 2014. Participants made Christmas cookies, played some games, and were delighted to welcome the 1st Paradise Scouts who generously collected and delivered toys to those who attended the event.
